We, as İSTAÇ, are aware of how environment is important for today as well as for next generations; thus, we try as much as possible doing better day by day. In solid waste storage sites we produce electricity from landfill gas. By reducing carbon release we both protect our environment and contribute country economy.

Wastes collected in solid waste landfill areas produce landfill gases while becoming stabilized as they are rotten by the result of anaerobic microbial activities by time. Landfill gas (aka storage gas) in landfill areas has great risks against human health and environment due to combustible-flammable features unless collecting and using it by proper techniques. To eliminate these risks, we fire these gases from sanitary landfill sites in Istanbul, in our power plants and we thus prevent their harmful effects.
We fire in a controllable manner the landfill gases in the production of energy, produced Odayeri and Kömürcüoda Landfill Sites, European and Asian sides respectively. Currently we produce a total of 65 MWh electrical power, in Odayeri Landfill Site 45 MWh and in Kömürcüoda Landfill Site 20 MWh. This energy produced from landfill solely, is sufficient for electricity needs of 600 thousands population. Income received from production of electricity is used for city cleaning and to reduce the costs needed for other waste management activities.
Besides the combustible-flammable features of landfill gas, comprised methane has 28 times more greenhouse effect in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide. By firing this gas in power plants, income is produced by selling the electricity; additionally reduction is provided in carbon release. It is anticipated that energy production systems in our plants will provide emission reduction corresponding yearly average of 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide by their economical lives. This corresponds the same carbon emission of 800.000 vehicles in traffic.
